Preventing Sexual Abuse

PREVENTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

-  Educate yourself about the prevention of child sexual abuse.

-  Request materials from Prevent Child Abuse Georgia Stop it Now Georgia a Public Health campaign designed to prevent the perpetration of child sexual abuse:

  • Let's Talk - booklet that provides information and tools to help adults to have difficult conversations that can prevent child sexual abuse.
  • Child Sexual Abuse - booklet that includes checklists of what to watch out for when adults are with children and how to develop a family safety plan.
  • Do Children Abuse Other Children - booklet that includes information on healthy sexual development as well as signs of what to watch out for when children are together.

  • Teach and supervise your children.
  • Teach children to be wary of strangers and explain to them that adults ask other adults for help.
  • Supervise children in public places such as parks, playgrounds and restrooms.
  • Teach children about appropriate and inappropriate physical contact.
  • Limit the amount of one-on-one time your child spends with adults.
  • Ask adult care-givers about the activities they have planned and confirm with your child whether the plans were carried out.
  • Drop in unexpectedly when your child is being cared for by friends or family.
  • Talk to your child and listen attentively when they tell you about their day.
