Back to Faith in Action Program

The education that we provide to our children, in great part, determines whether they live their dreams or their nightmares.

CALL TO ACTION - FEBURARY 17, 2010:

The Governor’s FY 11 proposed budget contemplates cutting the majority of funding of resource coordinators in order to fund 2000 additional Pre K slots. While we desperately need additional Pre K slots to meet the demonstrated need and to ensure that Georgia reaches its promise of universal Pre K, these additional slots cannot be funded by sacrificing the quality of the Pre K program. Resource coordinators play an essential role in ensuring that at-risk children enroll in pre K and are successful in school. Additional slots should not be funded by stretching existing Pre K resources. Instead, Georgia Pre K must have additional funding to ensure both quality and availability.

Please contact your legislators and urge them to provide the additional funding for Pre K for additional slots and for preserving the vital Resource Coordinator program. Remind them that the lottery funds are for the education of Georgia's children.

The Fact Sheet developed by The Southern Education Foundation and Voices for Georgia's Children will provide you with the detailed information you need to write your letters and make your phone calls.

From the study "Why Rural Matters 2009:"  GEORGIA – nearly one-third of all students in the state. It is the nation’s 3rd largest rural student population.  Minority and ELL rates are high in rural areas, as is student poverty and student mobility. Rural schools and districts are among the largest in the U.S., graduation rates are lower than all but 2 other states, and NAEP scores rank near the bottom. Concentrated poverty rural districts in Georgia graduate only 4 out of 10 of their students.  More than half a million public school students in Georgia attend rural schools.
